Liability insurance protects your company from having to pay for damages and destruction completely on your own, and it saves other drivers from having to pay for destruction or injuries they didn’t cause. Liability auto insurance provides coverage for you or any of your employees when they are driving for work related purposes. When employees drive to or from a contracted janitorial job site for instance, or delivering cleaning machinery to be serviced, your janitorial service’s commercial auto insurance policy is in effect.
Combined Single Limits
A combined single limit (CSL) policy is business auto insurance option that protects you with one fixed maximum benefit amount for each accident. This policy does not designate payout limitations based on whether there were bodily injuries or property damages in the accident. It protects you with coverage up to the maximum total that is set within your policy. For example, if you are at fault for an accident that destroys property but causes very few injures, the majority of your CSL policy benefits go towards paying for property damages and repairs since that’s where it is likely needed the most.
Split Limit Policy
A split limit business auto policy will place limits on the total maximum benefit amounts it will pay for specific types of harm that occurred in an accident. Individual states declare their own minimum coverage options by law, but your own policy will declare a maximum coverage amount. Maximum payouts are set separately for bodily injuries and property damages on a per accident basis. You cannot use funds allocated for bodily injury expenses to pay property damages or vice versa.
For example, if you choose a split limit policy of $100,000/$300,000/$50,000 for your commercial janitorial service’s auto insurance:
- Your policy would pay no more than $100,000 for each individual’s bodily injuries.
- Your policy will pay no more than $300,000 for the combined total of bodily injuries.
- Your policy will pay no more than $50,000 for the combined total of property damages.
Physical damages coverage
Physical damages coverage gives you an additional level of protection against the potential loss of your company’s vehicles. For example, if one of your cleaning employees is driving the company-owned steam cleaning van and has a severe roll over accident, the van may be damaged beyond repair. The physical damages protection that you carry as part of your business auto insurance policy will pay for the cost to repair or replace that van.
